Planned Phase IV work may include an in-depth analysis of satellite-derived SST images over the time period (1995-1999) defined by this workshop. This work will carefully examine the number and locations of Gulf Stream warm-core rings (WCR's), WCR-streamers, Scotian Shelf water overwashes, Northeast Channel eddies and Labrador Slope water surface signals. It is important to note that we will remap to a larger domain for this "census" work than our images available currently on the GLOBEC website. I anticipate some sort of "atlas" product along with availability of the products on both our JGOFS and *new* DODS site (soon!). I believe strongly that such an analysis is very important to any GLOBEC Georges Bank synthesis work.

Our covariance EOF analysis of SST imagery from late 1993 through late 1996 shows strong interannual variability (IAV) in the temperatures located offshore of Georges Bank which is attributed to IAV in the number of "degree-days" of WCR's over the 3-year period. This paper is forthcoming in the DSR II volume. I intend to bring some figures from this paper to the meeting. Our 5-day averaged OI SST grids/images extend from late 1993 through the end of 1998...I may be able to extend them through the end of 1999.

  • Pathfinder-processed AVHRR SST images and SST frontal images, 512 X 512 pixel, 1.4 km-resolution, GLOBEC "standard" domain (see Web-based documentation), 1985-1996 all passes (~2 images per day). (NOTE: Not Available on the GLOBEC Website)
  • MCSST-processed AVHRR SST images, 512 X 512 pixel, 1.4 km-resolution, GLOBEC "standard" domain (see Web-based documentation), 1993-present all passes (~2 images per day).
  • MCSST-processed AVHRR SST images, 512 X 512 pixel, 1.0 km-resolution, GLOBEC "blowup" domain (see Web-based documentation), 1995, 1997 & 1999 field periods all passes (~2 images per day).
  • MCSST-based, cloud-free, optimally-interpolated daily AVHRR SST 512 X 512 images and 5-day averaged SST ASCII grids, ~7.0 km-resolution, reduced GLOBEC "standard" domain, 1993-1998.
  • SST frontal ASCII files (raster & geolocated), 1985-1996 (Pathfinder-derived) and 1999 field year (MCSST-derived), all passes.
